popular flowers
Here are some of the most requested funeral flowers and the special message they can convey:
- lilies
One of the most popular choices and most commonly used to symbolise restored innocence of the soul of the departed – the white stargazer lily sub-breed is widely chosen for funerals.
- gladioli
A classic and traditional choice that are tall and majestic, and often convey strength of character, moral integrity and sincerity – available in a wide array of colours.
- carnations
Often used for funerals as they keep for a longer time – pink carnations can represent remembrance and white carnations can represent pure love, which makes these colours a popular choice.
- chrysanthemums
In many countries such as Spain, France, Poland and Hungary, chrysanthemums are solely used as funeral flowers. In Asia they can represent grief, while in the United States they can represent truth. Regardless of their symbolism, they are often chosen as a positive and cheerful tribute for a loved one.
- roses
This highly popular flower can carry different meanings depending on the colour; white roses can express reverence, innocence and youthfulness; red roses can convey respect, love and courage; pink roses can signify love, grace and gentility; crimson roses can denote grief and sorrow and yellow can represent friendship.
- orchids
Pink and white are traditional orchid colours used to express one’s sympathy and typically represent eternal love. Phalaenopsis and dendrobium orchids are generally the most chosen types of orchids used as sympathy flowers.
popular arrangements
Selecting the flowers is the first step – the next step is to choose an arrangement:
- inside pieces
Placed inside the casket and are generally arranged as sheaves, pillows, crosses or corner clusters. These are often brought to a funeral home by younger relatives of the deceased – children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren.
- floral baskets
Available in many shapes, sizes and styles and often sent to the funeral parlour, church or home of the bereaved. They are commonly displayed on top of tables or on the ground surrounding the casket.
- casket sprays
Placed directly on top of the closed casket, a full casket spray is used for the majority of our funerals. In most instances they are purchased by the family alone.
- standing sprays
Often the most noticeable feature as they stand between 1 and 3 feet high, standing sprays are displayed on an easel in a prominent position near the casket. Frequently arranged in the shape of a heart, cross or triangle and are typically sent directly to the funeral home or church.
- wreaths
Typically circular in shape to symbolise eternal life and are usually placed on doors of the funeral home. Unlike other arrangements – which are sent directly to the funeral home, church or the home of the bereaved – wreaths are generally brought to the place of burial.
- table arrangements
Vases, dish gardens and plants are commonly used as table arrangements for post-funeral events or as a sympathy gift. Visually they can look similar to flower baskets; however, they’re generally much smaller.
